Lagos hospital blood bank shut down after screened & unscreened blood found not separated

Members of the Lagos state House of Assembly Health Service Committee has ordered the closure of the Gbagada General Hospital's Blood bank after it was discovered that screened & unscreened blood in the blood bank were not separated. Speaking after the inspection exercise which occurred yesterday January 12th, the Chairman of the committee, Segun Olulade, expressed dissatisfaction at the level of disorganization witnessed in the blood bank unit. The team also inspected the Cardiac and Renal center of the hospital where they discovered that the equipment was being under utilized. According the director of the centre, Prof. Babatunde Olabode Green, some of the acquired world-class medical equipment were not functioning, either due to improper installations or poor quality of installation materials.

Nigerian born England midfielder, Dele Alli, has signed a new contract to keep him at Tottenham Hotspur until 2021. Lassa fever: Death toll rises to 40 - Min. of Health

ast Friday, The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the Federal Government put the death toll of Lassa fever as 40 out of 86 reported cases in 10 states. The number of the suspected cases has now risen from 86 to 93. The Senate summoned the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, over the outbreak of the disease and he confirmed it in Abuja, at a joint ministerial news conference on the update of the outbreak of the disease.

Police finds toddler walking alone who says she couldn't wake mummy up.

An off duty police officer made a tragic discovery after he picked up a little girl who said she was walking alone because she couldn’t “wake mummy up.” The off-duty officer, who has not been named, was driving with his wife when he spotted the toddler near Trent, last Wednesday. He approached her to ask her where she was going and she replied: “I am going to nursery. I can’t wake mummy up.” The girl then led him back to her home in Shobnall Road, where her mum, Nicolla Rushton, 30, was discovered dead. The heartbreaking details emerged yesterday as it was revealed police were not treating the death of Ms Rushton as suspicious. Chief Inspector Steve Maskrey, from Staffordshire Police, has since praised his officer and said his actions showed police “are never off duty.” He said: “This is a brilliant piece of work by him that shows that we are never off duty. Extrajudicial killings: IGP considers psychiatric testing for recruits, officers

Worried by the increasing rates of extrajudicial killings carried out by some of its officers, the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, yesterday hinted that recruits and officers of the force will be compelled to undergo a periodic psychiatric testing to determine their level of sanity. Arase said this at the Nigeria Police Force Health Policy Revalidation meeting in Abuja. He said that the force was working towards establishing a Trauma Centre for its officers because of the nature of their job. “The Police should be concerned about the mental health of officers, “ he said.

Court denies FG power to seize MTN's funds in Nigerian banks

Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court in Lagos has denied the Federal Government powers to seize all funds owned by MTN Nigeria Communications Limited in Nigerian banks, pending when the telecommunication company pays up the N1.4 trillion fine leveled against it by the NCC over its failure to deactivate unregistered sim cards. The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), through his counsel, Dipo Okpeseyi (SAN), had in a motion filed before the court, expressed fears of MTN moving all its funds in Nigeria, since it was in their habit to do so. According to the court paper, MTN had between October 2007 and May 2009 moved over $7.7bn of the money made in Nigeria to a foreign account.
